2011 Calendar now available!

Each year the Rotaract Club of South-West Brisbane works with Milpera State High School to produce a calendar to raise money for the Milpera HEAL (Home of Expressive Arts in Learning) program. This is a mental health program using the creative arts to support refugee students. For more information, see the 'About HEAL' section below on the right.

This website will show you some of the amazing artwork that is featured in the Rotaract-Milpera 2011 calendar.

"Cottontail and Angel Bust" by Charlee Pollard


Charlee Pollard loves to experiment with different media, textures and colour. Her love for decorating and her flair for design have seen her excell in a variety of creative mediums. "Cottontail and Angel Bust" is just one example of the diversity of her talents. This peice was constructed using two separate artworks - "Cottontail", a textured canvas, and "Angel Bust" a manequin restored through a unique resining and rusting technique.

“Tea for Two” by Barbara Humphreys


Barbara Humphreys is a mosaic artist who has developed her own particular style of mosacicing throughout the past five years. Her unique creations use polish-fired, fused and cut stained glass, glass beads as well as ceramic and china half cups, saucers and teapots.

“Freshwater Pearls” by Glynis Hood


Having grown up on the goldmines in South Africa, Glynis Hood developed a fascination with rocks and gold smelting. This facination has lead to a successful career in making amazing, award-winning jewellery. Glynis' work is available at Graceville Gallery (http://www.gracevillegallery.com.au/).
"Freshwater Pearls" by Glynis Hood is just one example of her intracate craftsmanship.

"School portraits" by Milpera students


"School portraits" by Milpera students displays the cultural diversity of the school and ultimately the cultural diversity of Australian society. Through the HEAL program these students are able to express themselves through art and music, without language being a barrier to understanding.

“Journey” by Jane Griffin


“Journey” shows a refugee youth in a new landscape. He brings the knowledge of his past as he strides into his present, open to potential for the future.

Jane Griffin is currently working at Milpera State High School and English reception centre where she practices art psychotherapy with newly arrived immigrant and refugee youth in the HEAL program, which she founded. At Milpera, art and music therapy allow the establishment of a sense of safety, a chance to mourn and celebrate aspects of the past, and a way to look to the future, for traumatised young people from war-affected countries.

“Jew Fish” by Stephen Bond


Stephen is an Indigenous artist who belongs to the Gubbi Gubbi people. He is a self-taught artist, whose work has been sold both in Australia and overseas. He is also a didgeridoo maker, painter and player, and has a strong commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth.

"Jew Fish" was a piece donated for auction to benefit a non-Indigenous group. In this way, Stephen made his own ‘small step of reconciliation’, as he put it, after the impact of the Prime Minister’s apology to the stolen generations.

“Magnificent Jake” by Craig Riddington and Monty Lee


Monty is a portrait and illustrative artist with previous work based around children’s books. She has combined forces with portrait and editorial photographer Craig Riddington to create a new style of multimedia-based portrait work. The style is based on utilising the talents of both Craig and Monty to produce portraits outside of the norm. The result is a very personalised and unique portrait of the child. “Spirit” by Bethany Mahadeo


Bethany is an occupational therapist and art therapist who has worked within adolescent mental health, most recently with traumatised refugee adolescents in HEAL at Milpera.
“Spirit” was created using an art therapy process of heuristic research. It explores a transition in spirituality. Art therapy in the context of undertaking a life review is highly effective for enhancing insight and understanding, processing emotions, and arriving at a more constructive, meaningful and personally truthful life account.

“Beyond the Sky” by Ghulam 'Sakhi' Hazara

Sakhi was born in Afghanistan and came to Australia as a refugee in 2000 to escape war and persecution. Since arriving in Australia, and after 15 months in Port Hedland Detention Centre, Sakhi’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Using a variety of mediums, he creates evocative art through which he expresses his life and experiences. His work combines Surrealism, symbolism and realism, in a style he has named ‘Hazaraism’.

"Sheep in Landscape" by Louise Grove-Wiechers


Louise Grove-Wiechers was born in South Africa and has been painting on a full-time basis for the last 15 years. She has had many solo and group exhibitions and has won several awards. Her work forms part of many private and corporate collections worldwide. Louise has travelled extensively to experience rural life and communities and since settling in Australia has been exploring the local Hinterland where she finds the same universal inspiration in the local landscape.

"Field of Flowers" by Paulette Flanagan


Paulette Flanagan has been painting for ten years at the Lilly-Lee Gallery. She has painted extensively in the genre of still life and recently moved into landscape and country themes. Her paintings are a true testament to her passion for colour and detail.

"Georgia" by Jessica Quinn


Jessica Quinn is a 20-year-old Fine Art student who enjoys painting portraits to explore the wonders of the face. Having created various commissioned works she aims to progress in this line of work and also apply new techniques and concepts to her artistic practice. The piece entitled ‘Georgia’ is part of a three piece series. Jessica is currently working on her new series of artworks for a future solo exhibition, which will include various mediums of painting, photography and sculpture.
